Announced this passed Thursday, Apple released the newest operating system for the iPhone, version 4 to Apple developers. However, eager users and beta testers who are not Apple developers are anxiously wanting to use the new firmware.
That's where I and others come in. Luckily it's fairly easy to get up and running with OS 4. Here is how.
In order for you to install the new beta operating system, your unique device identifier (UDID) needs to be registered with an Apple developer's account. Once this is done, you are then able to restore your device with the newest software with no issues.
This can only be done in OSX with the latest iTunes 9.1. Here is what to do.
1. Connect your iPhone 3gs or iPod touch 3g to your Mac - note this can only be done on a Mac
2. in the iPhone summary tab, find where it says your serial number and option click on it to change the serial number into your unique device identifier code it's a long string of 40 characters. note: that you'll have to disable voiceover to option click.
3. copy this code down and head over to www.myiphoneactivation.com and read the disclaimers and etc.
4. Paste the UDID into the box and click continue to checkout. It costs $10.
5. once the purchase is complete you are sent an email informing you that your UDID is now registered.
Now that you've got your UDID registered, you just restore your phone or iPod touch as you usually would. However, the only difference is that you need to option click again on the restore button in iTunes and browse to the IPSW that you downloaded from www.myiphoneactivation.com. The phone should restore as normal and you should automatically be rebooted into the new os.
I won't go into extreme detail, that's been covered elsewhere. The usability of the device seems to be normal however I've noticed some issues.
1. after trying to purchase a song from itunes, the device crashes and reboots when the download begins.
2. Sometimes when I receive a phone call, voiceover and the ringtone speed up to chimp munk speed and I have no clue who's calling.
3. As mentioned in a previous post, the multitasking UI is not accessible, but it is there nonetheless. This doesn't really matter much anyway because there aren't any apps released to end users that take advantage of this that we'd use anyway such as skype. In fact, skype just reports that it's not compatible with this operating system and it just seems to continue working as usual anyway.
4. When in the iPod, and voice starts talking, the music does not gain backs it's volume after fading out so voiceover can be heard. However it doesn't seem to do this elsewhere.
Some voiceover improvements include phonetic announcing of letters, separate pitch adjustment for selected items if you are going through menus, tables are now in the web roter, the unlock button on the lock screen now says: "slide to unlock" you may slide or double tap. for those who have issues with that button and cannot see it at all, the lock icon is at the bottom left of the screen, and you press it and drag your finger across the bottom to the right and let go. The status bar at the top has changed as well. Instead of telling you percentages for wifi signals it gives you bars, however it doesn't seem to tell me if I'm on 3g or not, even though i know I am. This is probably because I'm connected to wireless. Voiceover now supports bluetooth braille displays but I don't know which brands. The orientation is now read as well as which direction the home button is.
Other issues you might encounter with OS 4 would be that the battery does not want to charge and sticks at 6%. the fix to this is to remove the cim card and reinsert it while the device is off. I don't know why this works, but it does.
I really object to giving money to anyone other than apple in order to use this os.
All the people who are using there developer access to make peoples uids into developer ones are just as bad as the people who try to sell crappy cams of films burnt on to even crappier dvd's. A developer can authorise up to 100 devices per account, so assuming that he / she is running the os themselves, 99 customers at $10 a piece = $999 for someone elses product.
Pirate the os when it comes out if you want, but personally I think it's wrong that all of these developers are making money off something that isn't theres.
Sorry for the duplicate post. This is not hacked or cracked. I could afford $10 and I got my service from them, so in my book they are reputable. I don't even think Apple really minds all that much. I've been told as well as some of my friends that buy a program such as iWork, they tell you it is meant for 1 coputer but they don't really care if you install it on more than one.
